Your result for Which fantasy writer are you?...

Philip Pullman (b.1946)

7 High-Brow, -23 Violent, 5 Experimental and 10 Cynical!

Congratulations! You are High-Brow, Peaceful, Experimental and Cynical! These concepts are defined below.

Philip Pullman was already a prominent author of children's books when he published his most praised work to date, the trilogy known as His Dark Materials (1995-2000). In this work, set both in parallel worlds and our own, Pullman made a courageous attempt to write a book for young readers which incorporated a whole vision of the universe, as well as a discussion of ethical issues. He managed to combine this with a burst of thought-provoking and entertaining imagination, bringing to life a Europe where the church is still in control, "souls" that have been externalised as animal presences, intelligent, sentient polar bears and much more. The series have been described as a sort of "anti-Narnia", as Pullman's attempt to write an updated variant of the kind of books C S Lewis, whom Pullman has criticized for having racist, misogynic and preaching tendencies, wanted to write. His Dark Materials has also spawned some controversy among Christians, who see the the work as an attack against Christianity, Pullman being one of Britain's most outspoken atheists. Other Christians have, however, claimed to have found spirituality in the books.

Either way, Pullman's combination of renewal and expansion of the genre, his profound messages on the value of life and his refusal to under-estimate his young readers' ability to see life as it is makes Pullman one of the most interesting and important writers of modern fantasy.

You are also a lot like Tove Jansson.

If you want something some action, try Gene Wolfe.

If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, J R R Tolkien.

Your score

This is how to interpret your score: Your attitudes have been measured on four different scales, called 1) High-Brow vs. Low-Brow, 2) Violent vs. Peaceful, 3) Experimental vs. Traditional and 4) Cynical vs. Romantic. Imagine that when you were born, you were in a state of innocence, a tabula rasa who would have scored zero on each scale. Since then, a number of circumstances (including genetical, cultural and environmental factors) have pushed you towards either end of these scales. If you're at 45 or -45 you would be almost entirely cynical, low-brow or whatever. The closer to zero you are, the less extreme your attitude. However, you should always be more of either (eg more romantic than cynical). Please note that even though High-Brow, Violent, Experimental and Cynical have positive numbers (1 through 45) and their opposites negative numbers (-1 through -45), this doesn't mean that either quality is better. All attitudes have their positive and negative sides, as explained below.

High-Brow vs Low-Brow

You received 7 points, making you more High-Brow than Low-Brow. Being high-browed in this context refers to being more fascinated with the sort of art that critics and scholars tend to favour, rather than the best-selling kind. At their best, high-brows are cultured, able to appreciate the finer nuances of literature and not content with simplifications. At their worst they are, well, snobs.

Violent vs. Peaceful

You received -23 points, making you more Peaceful than Violent. This scale is a measurement of a) if you are tolerant to violence in fiction and b) whether you see violence as a means that can be used to achieve a good end. If you aren't, and you don't, then you are peaceful as defined here. At their best, peaceful people are the ones who encourage dialogue and understanding as a means of solving conflicts. At their worst, they are standing passively by as they or third parties are hurt by less scrupulous individuals.

Experimental vs. Traditional

You received 5 points, making you more Experimental than Traditional. Your position on this scale indicates if you're more likely to seek out the new and unexpected or if you are more comfortable with the familiar, especially in regards to culture. Note that traditional as defined here does not equal conservative, in the political sense. At their best, experimental people are the ones who show humanity the way forward. At their worst, they provoke for the sake of provocation only.

Cynical vs Romantic

You received 10 points, making you more Cynical than Romantic. Your position on this scale indicates if you are more likely to be wary, suspicious and skeptical to people around you and the world at large, or if you are more likely to believe in grand schemes, happy endings and the basic goodness of humankind. It is by far the most vaguely defined scale, which is why you'll find the sentence "you are also a lot like x" above. If you feel that your position on this scale is wrong, then you are probably more like author x. At their best, cynical people are able to see through lies and spot crucial flaws in plans and schemes. At their worst, they are overly negative, bringing everybody else down.

Hey, guess what, kids! Kristy's not dead! Just very very busy. For those of you out of the loop, Cameron and I are back together. The long distance thing is hard, and I'm planning on moving back up there as soon as I can.

School is lame, as usual. Memorizing the muscles of the body is both difficult and time consuming. Speech class is boring, however, we only have one more speech and then the semester will be done, thank the gods. Computer class is actually getting interesting because we're doing excel now. I know nothing about excel, so I'm actually learning something now. Semester is over at the beginning of May.

I'm kinda going through an existential crisis right now. I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I have no idea why I'm here. I can't make any decisions because I have no idea what would be the best one to make. I've come to a standstill in everything except my love life, and it terrifies me.

On a brighter note, Cameron is coming down either this weekend or next weekend, depending on what his boss says. That will be all kinds of fun, because he's hoping to stay for a week.

I haven't really had much time to do anything but school, work, and talk to Cameron lately. We've been playing WoW together in our spare time, which is usually late at night.

Anyway, I'm tired and I need a break.

So, lots of stuff has been happening. The biggest thing is that Cameron and I are back together, and we're not keeping it hidden this time. I'm unbelievably happy. Hopefully I'm going up to Huntsville this weekend to see him. Other than that, I've mostly been working and going to school. I don't really feel like continuing this right now. I might finish it later, I'm really not sure.

One of the nurses that works for one of the doctors we answer for has a last name that makes me giggle. Sprinkle. Just for general lulz, but also for a reason I won't go into currently, but which Ray and Mike would both get.

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
umm... I moved in with my dad and step-mom? I've never lived with her full time, and I don't remember living with him (was too little)

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't do New Year's resolutions. I don't think that the new year is a good enough reason to make a change in my life. If I want to make a change, it has nothing to do with it being a new year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
umm... Well, I know a lot of people that had babies, but none of them were particularly close to me.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
Didn't leave the country this year.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
A car.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
May 24. The day I decided I was definitely leaving Bryan.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Going back to school

9. What was your biggest failure?
Moving back in with my parents.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not to speak of

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Tickets to Dragon*Con. So much fun!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My nephew Nathan, for being the sweetest and best behaved not-quite-2-year-old I've ever seen

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
*cough*Bryan and Wanda*cough*

14. Where did most of your money go?
Credit card payments and saving for tuition

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Dragon*Con... umm... Going back to school?

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
erm... I dunno... I don't really associate music with particular years. More with people and events.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier, I guess, but that's not saying much
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner! I've lost 30 lbs since I moved down here!
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer, technically, since Bryan was making so much, but I have access to more of it

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Keeping in touch with friends. I moved back and everyone had disappeared

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Putting up with Bryan's shit??

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Eating seafood at my sister's house, then going to work (double-time pay for the win!)

21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?
Dunno... Hoping to be dating someone by then, at least casually.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?
Yes, actually. Unfortunately, it didn't work out.

23. How many one-night stands?
This year? None, so far. Hoping for at least one soon. I really need to get laid...

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Well, Gilmore Girls, of course, but also Dexter, Doctor Who, and Torchwood

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I think I didn't hate Bryan yet this time last year.

26. What was the best book you read?
OMG, so many! Don't know how to choose

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Snow Patrol, Plain White T's, and the soundtrack from Across the Universe

28. What did you want and got?
A new start! Also, a peacoat!

29. What did you want but didn't get?
A divorce...

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk (why yes, I am a geek! How could you tell? XD)

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Umm... I think Cameron took me out to see the Dark Knight, but I might be wrong. Don't really remember. I turned 23.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A divorce?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
Jeans and sweaters/t-shirts/whatever shirt fit me (this was not a good year for clothes for me.)

34. What kept you sane?
Internetz. And, oddly enough, my family

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Well, besides my usuals (Seth Green, Trent Reznor, Johnny Depp) I developed quite the crush on Gareth David-Lloyd of Torchwood fame. And of course, David Tennant of Doctor Who.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Gay marriage, universal health care, abortion, you name it, I argued about it.

37. Who did you miss?
So many people. At the beginning, I missed my family. Then I missed Cameron. Now I miss all my old friends. And, as always, I miss Dustin and Kent.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Hmm... tough one. Well, Ray is both cool and hot. Sarah, from work, is also cool and hot. Haven't really met all that many people, honestly.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008:
Don't get married just because otherwise you'll break up?

40. Quote a lyric that sums up your year:
Jeez.. Ask a hard one... OK....
First I was afraid
I was petrified
...
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on

So, my wallet was stolen this afternoon. They withdrew $500 from my bank account, leaving me $157 overdrawn. They didn't manage to charge anything on my credit card, though, so that's good, at least. I called and cancelled my debit card, credit card, and angel card, and I think that's all of them. Tomorrow I'm filing a police report, going to the dmv, and going to my credit union to let them know that someone has my account number. I'm really freaking upset about this.

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Neutral. Not Northern, Southern, or Western, just American. Your national American identity is more important to you than your local identity, because you don't really have a local identity to begin with.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

Well, people do say that most of the time I don't sound like I'm Southern.

Well, Happy Effing Christmas...

Bryan's grandmother, Anne, is dying. We're trying our damnedest to get to Asheville before she passes. Of course, if we go there, once she goes, we have to drive back to Mobile. If she doesn't, then I won't get to spend any of Christmas with my family.

I don't begrudge her or any of his family. I mean, I totally understand wanting to be there when she dies. I wanted to be there for both of my grandparents. It just seems like everything is coming crashing down on me all at once. I spent so much time making these plans, and its come to nothing. I'm sick as a dog. I'm starting my period in a couple of days (we'll be traveling. Fun, huh?) And now Bry's Grandma is dying, and I don't know what to do. He's so upset because he's not there with her, and its worse because I'm not with him when its all going down. He's going through so much, and I'm being selfish.

I'm upset about my plans not working out. I hate not knowing what's going to happen. Everything hinges on whether or not she makes it through the night. If she dies tonight, we're staying here, because this is where the funeral will be. If she makes it, we drive to Asheville. If we don't get to come back here, we have to arrange to have all our unopened presents sent to Cali.

Of course, on top of all this is my own grief about Anne. She is the most amazing person. On my wedding day, she gave me one of her nicest pieces of jewelry to wear, and when I tried to give it back after the wedding, she wouldn't take it. Even though she's in her eighties, she has the strongest singing voice. She loves old gospel songs, and she'll sing them at the top of her lungs. She can hardly see at all, but she loves to play rook. She's good at it, too. Until this past year, you would never know her age to talk to her. She has energy and vigor to spare. Anne has faith, and it is unshakable. I love her dearly, and I'm going to miss her more than I would have thought possible.
